Workshop on sustainable community tourism development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas in An Giang province

On December 2, 2025, at Dong Xuyen Hotel, Long Xuyen Ward, Vietnam National Administration of Tourism - Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism chaired the Workshop on sustainable community tourism development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas.

Attending the workshop were: (1) Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa Mai, Deputy Director of Vietnam National Administration of Tourism; (2) Mr. Nguyen Trung Thanh, Deputy Director of An Giang Department of Tourism; (3) Ms. Nguyen Tam Tuyet Trinh, Deputy Director of the Provincial Center for Investment, Trade and Tourism Promotion; (4) Mr. Nguyen Xuan Bang, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of An Giang Newspaper and Radio - Television; (5) Representatives of the People's Committees of communes and wards: Long Xuyen, An Cu, Nui Cam, Vinh Hau, Chau Phong; (6) Associations and tourism businesses along with the Cham ethnic community and the Khmer ethnic community doing tourism in An Giang province.

The workshop was organized within the framework of Project 6 under the National Target Program on Socio-Economic Development of Ethnic Minority and Mountainous Areas for the 2021-2030 period. The project aims to preserve and promote traditional cultural values, associated with community tourism development and sustainable poverty reduction. This is a forum for localities, experts and businesses to share experiences, overcome difficulties and propose solutions to improve the quality of community tourism models in a sustainable manner.

In her opening speech at the Workshop, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa Mai emphasized: An Giang province is a locality rich in potential with the cultural exchange of the Cham and Khmer communities, expressed through architecture, religion, Halal cuisine and a diverse ecosystem from sea, islands, mountains, hills to rivers. Through the Workshop, the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism hopes to support the community to understand local advantages, grasp ways to build and promote tourism products and update policies related to community tourism development.

Representative of the Department of Tourism of An Giang province, Mr. Nguyen Trung Thanh, Deputy Director of the Department affirmed: the province will continue to accompany the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, agencies, units and local communities in implementing the sustainable community tourism model; at the same time, focusing on preserving the cultural identity of the Cham and Khmer ethnic groups, improving the capacity of the people and protecting the ecological environment.

At the Workshop, there were many presentations as follows: (1) Orientation for preserving and exploiting traditional architecture (Dr. Nguyen Anh Cuong, Hanoi University of Culture); (2) Building a chain of tourism products from heritage and local cultural life (Dr. Vu Thi Uyen, Hanoi University of Culture); (3) Community tourism model and basic skills for households (Dr. Tu Anh Nguyet); (4) Information on developing community tourism in An Giang (Ms. Dang Duc Phong).

The discussion session was lively with the participation of Cham and Khmer community tourism households and tourism businesses in the province. The content focused on assessing the current situation, analyzing potentials and advantages, identifying difficulties and proposing solutions to develop community tourism in An Giang in a sustainable direction, contributing to creating livelihoods and promoting the image of local tourism in the coming time.

The workshop is an opportunity for management agencies, experts, businesses and the community to have a more comprehensive view of the potential for community tourism development in An Giang. The opinions and solutions discussed will be an important basis for the province to continue to perfect the model, improve service quality and promote local cultural values. Thereby, An Giang aims to build unique and sustainable community tourism products, contributing to improving people's livelihoods and promoting the province's tourism image to become more professional and attractive.
